Transitive & Intransitive Verbs
Transitive Verbs:
Transitive Verbs need an object to completing the meaning.
EXAMPLE:
_ I cooked- Wrong (cooked what?)
I cooked pizza.
_ Samir drove- Wrong (drove what?)
Samir drove a nice car yesterday.
_ We play- Wrong ( play what?)
We play tennis every day.
Intransitive Verbs:
Intransitive verbs don't have a direct object after them.
EXAMPLE:
_ He slept.
_ Sarah cried.
_ They laughed.
_ We smiled.
Ambitransitive Verbs:
There are verbs that are both Transitive and Intransitive. Transitive can be in one sentence and intransitive in the another. We call them Ambitransitive Verbs.
EXAMPLE:
_ You have grown a lot since I saw you last year. (Intransitive)
_ You have grown a long beard since I saw you last year. (Transitive)
P.S. Sometimes the meaning changes depending on whether the verb is transitive or intransitive.
EXAMPLE:
_ She runs for one hour every morning (Intransitive: run - the action/ sport)
_ She runs a small grocery store (transitive: nun - manage)
